The basic number (as shown above) was always preceded by an "18" for regular 85/95hp motors or a "54" for the smaller 60hp motors. The chart above does not include these prefixes. The actual stamping of the motor number was done into the top of the transmission case near the top of the bell housing. When the motor and transmission were placed into the chassis, the same numbers were stamped into the frame rails of the new chassis.

Resources: The information given in this chart is based on the data given in "The Early Ford V8 as Henry Built It" by Edward P. Francis and George DeAngelis (IBSN 0-911383-03-4).

Caveat!  In reviewing the various sources of serial number information (and we have not even researched them all) we find that there are occasional discrepancies. Sometimes, the Ford record keeping was not entirely correct. Some serial numbers within a sequence were simply never assigned to a vehicle. Other details that don't make sense prevent us some assuming 100% reliability in these statistics. As confirmed details become available to us, we will add reference notes or make corrections as necessary. Also, the monthly production of motors is not a very reliable source for identifying when the vehicle was built. The motors were shipped out to the various branch assembly plants, where they were put into stock and fed into the local production as needed. Depending on where the motor was shipped, and the motor stock situation at that particular plant, the motor could be in the system for up to a couple months before being placed into a production chassis for completion as a finished automobile or truck.

Notes:

a) The first part of V8 60hp motor block production had the "tin side" configuration. With motor #21,901 Ford changed to the all-cast iron block.
b) The first of the 1940 model 60hp blocks with the larger crank journals was motor #506,501.
c) Actual first production of the V8 60hp motor was begun in 1935 for shipment to overseas model manufacturing (thru serial #6601). First production for the U.S. market began with #6602 in June of 1936 for the 1937 model year cars.
